VB Local Wins CE ECSC

Virginia Beach Local, Michael Dunphy, Wins CE-ECSC

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Virginia Beach, VA – Virginia Beach native, Michael Dunphy, has won the Vans Men’s Pro at the 52nd annual Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships – the first time a Virginia Beach surfer has won the competition since Wes Laine in 1981.

Dunphy bested Deivid Silva in the finals of the Association of Surfing Professionals 4 star event held in Virginia Beach during ECSC.

“It feels really, really good having my family and friends cheering me on,” Dunphy said. “I knew I could do it, I just needed to get the right waves.”

Paul West, director of the surfing competition at ECSC, said, “It was a really exciting last three minutes. It went back and forth and I can’t remember a more exciting finish to an ECSC in many years.”

When asked if his knowledge of the local break helped him in the competition Dunphy said that he’d been surfing here all his life, but what really mattered was making sure he found the perfect wave to seal the deal.

“When you;re winning time feels like it’s moving as slow as molasses, Dunphy said. “It just can’t go by fast enough.”

The 52nd Annual Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships presented by Vans is produced by the Virginia Beach Jaycees, a volunteer community service organization.  The Coastal Edge ECSC is promoted by Resort Management, LLC.  All beach sports and music at the CE-ECSC beach festival are open to the public, free of charge to spectators; competitors pay various entry fees.  Food concessions are available for purchase.  Portions of the proceeds raised at the event benefit the Jaycee’s many charitable projects.
